The twin towers were two almost identical high rise buildings and were part of the building complex in the former American World trade center. It surpassed the empire state building as the tallest building in the world, and held the record as the tallest building in the world from 1971 to 1973, before being surpassed itself, by the Willis Tower.
The twin towers were original, referred to as 1 World Trade Center and 2 World Trade Center, but after their collapse, have been replaced by One World Trade Center.

Attack, Death & Collapse
On September 11, 2001, Islamic terrorists, hijacked United Airlines Flight 175 and American Airlines Flight 11. The terrorists then crashed the planes into the twin towers. The buildings later collapse due to the inferno, damaging the entire World Trade Center complex.
